Happy New year 2012. Invest 98W previously located in the South China Sea has move westward to the Peninsula Malaysia and Southern Thailand bringing intermittent to heavy rainfall across the area. The GFS model has forecast this low pressure system to persist until early evening today (1 January 2012).
The Malaysian Meteorological Department has issued a Orange Stage heavy rain warning to the northern states of Peninsula Malaysia (Perlis, Kedah and Kelantan) for today as a result of this Invest moving across this three states and this system is expected to leave the peninsula by early evening today. On the other hand, the Thailand Meteorological Department also issued a heavy scattered thunderstorm warning to the southern east and west coast of Thailand and warned of possibility of flash flood due to this heavy rainfall.
Rainfall ranging from moderate to heavy (30mm to 60mm) since midnight 1 January has been reported by the Malaysian Drainage and Irrigation Department over the affected area and the amount of rainfall is expected to increase later today as the system continue to move west northwest as informed by the Japanese Meteorological Agency. The JMA has classified this system as a Tropical Depression.
