02 JAN 2012 LPA near Mindanao, Western Pacific Weather Update

A low pressure area near Mindanao is bringing the threat of heavy rains to the island today. Recent satellite imagery displays the large cluster of clouds to the South West of the Philippines moving slowly to the North West. Pagasa has issued an Advisory on the region Stating. “These weather systems will bring mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms over Visayas and Mindanao becoming cloudy with widespread rains over Eastern and Southern Mindanao which may trigger flashfloods and landslides. “

Another threat of this system though will be its persistence. Current Model analysis indicates it will linger in the region during the duration of the coming week. With the ground already saturated in the area the threat of further flooding is evident and probable.

Meanwhile another low is moving across Malaysia and Thailand today bringing even more rainfall to that region. See the Video Update from this morning put out by Francis for more in depth analysis on this system.

And lastly Japan continues to get heavy snowfall. The chart below indicates the recent snowpack that has fallen in the past week.
