SE Asia Weather Update 05 Jan 2012

We continue to watch on the weather over the South East Asia today. We have an area of low pressure issued by the Thailand Meteorological Department over the South East Asia today which is located just the coast of the Borneo Island bringing a very heavy precipitation over that particular area.

Heavy rain showers of over 120mm has been reported by WMO over the past 24 hour and the Malaysia Drainage and Irrigation Department  has recorded a total of rainfall over 200mm in over the past 24 hour. Some localize flooding has been reported over the city of Kuching and the relevant agency has warned over a continuous rise of water level as the Malaysia Meteorological Agency has issued a Yellow Stage Heavy Rain warning over this area which is forecast to persist until the 7th of January 2012.

As for the Peninsula Malaysia and Thailand, fair weather over the past two days and good news from flood affected area in Northern Peninsula Malaysia and Southern Thailand as nearly all evacuation center has now being closed and victims are allowed to go back to their respective residential. Water level all across the affected area are to be reported back to normal level again.

However, as mentioned in my last forecast, the MMA has forecast intermittent occasionally moderate rainfall to happen to several area in Johor (Mersing & Kota Tinggi) and Pahang (Kuantan, Pekan, Maran & Rompin) beginning from tomorrow (6th of January 2012 until the 8th of January 2012). Hence, we would definitely advice residents from above mentioned area to stay alert and beware of the possibility of flooding.

Meanwhile in the PI, the heavy rain continue with rainfall over 100mm reported over Catarman and rainfall accumulated 60mm in the area of Visayas and Mindanao. The monsoonal trough in the Southern region of the PI has caused yet again more problem for the relief effort from Washi as said before by Rob and now the trough has extended over to the Central and North of the PI with rainfall approaching 100mm reported in Infanta and Daet. Good news is that Invest 99W is no longer on the radar.Pagasa today issued the following advisory on their website at 1100 local time “The tail-end of a cold front affecting Southern Luzon and Visayas while the wind convergence affecting Mindanao.Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will have mostly cloudy with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms becoming cloudy with widespread rains over Southern Leyte, Bohol, Surigao Provinces, Agusan Provinces, Misamis Oriental, Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.”

And finally in Brunei and Singapore, the weather remain fair with some areas partly cloudy and evening thunderstorms are expected for the coming days until the end of the monsoonal trough. The Third Category Strong Wind and Rough Sea warning with winds over 60kmph and wave of higher than 5.5 meter for the South China Sea is now extended until the 10th of January 2012.

Stay safe and have a good day.
