The image above shows the well-established eye of Sanvu nearing the Ogasawara Islands. The thick clouds indicating the eyewall is also moving near or at Iwo To. Latest reports from the airport there indicate heavy rain and strong winds with sustained speeds of around 100kph and occasional gusts of up to 130kph.

We expect conditions here to worsen and stay stormy for the next 12 hours. Rough waves and very strong winds will continue battering the islands into early tomorrow morning (Sunday). There could be as much as 100mm of rain in some places as well. Chichi-Jima, just a couple hundred kilometers north of Iwo To, is still reporting calm conditions but the weather here should deteriorate later today. Gale and High Waves Advisories are up for the Ogasawara Islands.

We’ll have more updates throughout the day as we watch Sanvu pass closely to the islands. Stay safe!
