More rain for Hainan and Vietnam with the arrival of Kiko

Tropical Depression Kiko continues to develop just west of Palawan.  With the subtropical ridge to the north and northeast and a weak trough over China–this is helping to influence Kiko toward Hainan province and northern Vietnam for yet another round of flooding rains for the area.  Current forecasts have the depression strengthening over the next couple days prior to landfall.  If it becomes a tropical storm, JMA will name it “Mangkhut,” which is a Thai fruit.
