Typhoon Neoguri continues to slowly intensify as it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility. It has been assigned the local name ‘Bagyong Florita’ by PAGASA. However, we are not expecting this typhoon to directly impact the Philippines. It will, however, enhance the Southwest Monsoon which will bring scattered rains to large parts of the country over the next few days. Communities along the eastern seaboard should also watch out for rough waves churned by Neoguri.

But the more pressing part of this typhoon is its impact across the Japanese Islands. Forecasts are closely tracking the center to just west of Okinawa by Tuesday morning. This scenario will place the strongest winds of Neoguri across the islands. We are expecting winds of up to 185kph along with heavy rains of up to 400mm and high waves that could reach 5 meters or more.

After the Ryukyu Islands, Neoguri is expected to head northeastward towards Mainland Japan. It could make landfall in Kyushu by Thursday morning and will bring strong winds and heavy rains across the region.

Please prepare now if you reside in Okinawa or one of the nearby islands. Stock up on food, water, medicine, and bring loose objects inside. Once the winds start howling, please stay indoors and do not try to venture outside. As always, follow the instructions and warnings from your local officials!

Stay safe
