Bitter cold continues to embrace the north, while temperatures hold steady in the central region, the heat continues in the south, and the tropics remain warm and humid but relatively quiet.
NORTH
The big chill stays put across the northern extremes of the north region, as portions of Mongolia, northern china, eastern Russia, and Korea find temperatures hovering at, or well below, freezing today. High pressure is well established over the area, and skies will be mostly clear with lots of cold sunshine. Farther south and east, temperatures are a bit warmer with the close proximity of a pair of weak storms, and associated frontal systems, over the area. Areas of central and eastern China, and Japan, will see a few more clouds, with Shanghai finally drying out a bit form the past few days’ rainfall.

CENTRAL
A complex frontal scenario exists offshore of the central region today, with one weak stationary frontal system extending to the east from central China to Japan, and a second, more active, storm system moving out to sea southeast of Japan. Most of the moisture is being pulled out of the region by the stronger system, while the coldest air remains behind the stationary frontal boundary to the northwest. Taiwan and Hanoi can expect a few lingering showers today, while everyone else sees just a few clouds and plenty of sunshine.

SOUTH
More intense heat is on for parts of the south region today especially across southern Indochina and the southern Philippines as the sun angle begins to increase, beaming down healthy, intense, rays of sunshine over the region. Drier continental air associated with the seasonal northeast monsoon is helping keep the surface layer pretty dry, so clouds are few and far between across many portions of the region today. Singapore, and Malaysia, far to the south, will be the exception today with plenty of afternoon thunderstorms firing up at the peak of daytime heating.

TROPICS
The tropics are still mostly quiet today, devoid of any real organized activity within the I.T.C.Z. (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone). The “hybrid trough” described in yesterday’s report still exists, and has stretched out a bit more during the past 24 hours. Clouds and showers are concentrated in the southern Mariana Islands, and portions of west and central Micronesia. Another very weak tropical wave is drifting westward through portions of the eastern Marshall Islands, bringing a few clouds and showers to the area. All other locations can expect plenty of sunshine and just a few clouds today and we cruise through the mid-week.
