NWPAC outlook, 12 JAN

NWPAC outlook, 12 JAN

Bitter cold air stays entrenched over the northern region while more clouds and rainfall hang around the central region. The south region stays hot and mostly dry, and the tropics are once again, dead quiet.

NORTH

Temperatures in the northern region are moderating slightly, but the frigid conditions are still well locked in. Northern China, Mongolia and eastern Russia will once again fail to reach freezing, while Beijing and Seoul will just barely hit the mark. A newly-developing storm system is forming over central china, helping squeeze out a few snow showers. A second weak, yet developing system is south of Japan, and will bring clouds and showers to eastern China, and some snowfall to parts of Japan.

Ulaanbaatar -17 (01 -27 (-17) Fair
Vladivostok -7 (19) -17 (1) Fair
Beijing 1 (34) -9 (16) Fair

Tokyo 6 (43) 2 (36) Snow Showers
Xi’an 3 (37) -6 (21) Snow Showers
Shanghai 7 (45) 1 (34) Cloudy

CENTRAL

The aforementioned developing storm system south of Japan is also helping to drag some moisture into parts of southern China, northern Indochina, and Taiwan. Hanoi and Hong Kong will see mostly clouds, but offshore, Taiwan will see quite a bit of scattered shower activity through the day.

Taipei 17 (66) 14 (61) Scattered Showers

Hanoi 21 (70) 17 (63) Cloudy

 SOUTH

Just as the cold stays locked in up north, the heat remains locked in just as well in the south. The seasonal northeast monsoon is helping to drag some drier continental air into the region, keeping skies partly cloudy in most locations. An old “hybrid” trough has settled over the northern Philippines, and could be a focus for a few thundershowers at the peak of daytime heating.

TROPICS

For the second straight day, activity along the I.T.C.Z. (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone) is absolutely negative, with no areas to watch whatsoever. Clouds and moisture are sparse across the tropics today, so everyone should see just a few clouds and warm temperatures.

NWPAC outlook, 11 JAN

NWPAC outlook, 11 JAN

Very cold air has settled into portions of the north, while the central is starting to see more changes as well. The south stays hot and sticky, and the tropics go relatively silent.

NORTH

A strong double-barrel storm system is making its way to the east after bringing Japan their first significant snowfall of the season this weekend, and it’s taking most of the moisture with it. Cold air has entrenched itself over portions of Mongolia, northern China, and eastern Russia, where high temperatures will stay WELL below freezing today. Cold air has also settled in a little farther south, and while it’s not as cold, most locations will see afternoon temperatures only slightly above the freezing mark. Eastern China will see considerable cloudiness and rainfall as a newly-developing storm system starts to affect the area.

City High Temp C (F) Low Temp C (F) Conditions
Ulaanbaatar -18 (0) -31 (-24) Fair
Vladivostok -7 (19) -18 (0) Fair
Beijing -1 (30) -10 (14) Fair
Seoul 1 (34) -8 (18) Fair
Tokyo 10 (50) 3 (37) Partly Cloudy
Xi’an 4 (39) -4 (25) Partly Cloudy
Shanghai 8 (46) 3 (37) Rain

CENTRAL

Temperatures are holding steady across the central region as the cooler air from the north continues to filter in and reinforce the existing cool air mass. A newly-developing storm system will slide through the region this week and bring plenty of clouds and rain, and another shot of cooler air by the weekend. Most locations across the central region will see nice weather today, but Taiwan will see quite a bit of rain and northern Indochina will be dealing with some clouds and scattered showers.

Kunming 14 (57) 1 (34) Fair
Hong Kong 18 (64) 15 (59) Partly Cloudy
Taipei 19 (66) 16 (61) Rain
Iwo To 10 (50) 3 (37) Partly Cloudy
Hanoi 21 (70) 17 (63) Rain

 SOUTH

More hot weather is in store for residents and visitors in the south region today, as the seasonal northeast monsoon keeps the skies mostly clear and lets the warm sunshine come right through. A few showers will fall across portions of northern Vietnam, and Cambodia today as a new weather system forms to the north. Plenty of showers and thunderstorms will be around Indonesia and Malaysia, although coverage will be less than in previous days due to a lack of any real focused areas of convection. An old continental trough is also lingering over the northern Philippines, and a few showers and thunderstorms could pop up along this weak boundary during the afternoon.

Siem Reap 31 (88) 23 (73) Scattered Showers
Ho Chi Minh 34 (93) 24 (75) Partly Cloudy

Davao City 32 (90) 23 (73) Partly Cloudy
Brunei 32 (90) 24 (75) Thunderstorms
Singapore 31 (88) 26 (79) Thunderstorms

TROPICS

Taking a look out across the tropics, and we find relatively silent conditions along the I.T.C.Z. (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone) today. Almost all locations in the tropics will see just a few clouds today, except for Palau, which could see a few afternoon thundershowers pop up with the small pocket of moisture that is moving through.

Have a great Monday!!
