NWPAC outlook, 11 JAN

NWPAC outlook, 11 JAN

Very cold air has settled into portions of the north, while the central is starting to see more changes as well. The south stays hot and sticky, and the tropics go relatively silent.

A strong double-barrel storm system is making its way to the east after bringing Japan their first significant snowfall of the season this weekend, and it’s taking most of the moisture with it. Cold air has entrenched itself over portions of Mongolia, northern China, and eastern Russia, where high temperatures will stay WELL below freezing today. Cold air has also settled in a little farther south, and while it’s not as cold, most locations will see afternoon temperatures only slightly above the freezing mark. Eastern China will see considerable cloudiness and rainfall as a newly-developing storm system starts to affect the area.

Ulaanbaatar -18 (0) -31 (-24) Fair

Tokyo 10 (50) 3 (37) Partly Cloudy
Xi’an 4 (39) -4 (25) Partly Cloudy
Shanghai 8 (46) 3 (37) Rain

Temperatures are holding steady across the central region as the cooler air from the north continues to filter in and reinforce the existing cool air mass. A newly-developing storm system will slide through the region this week and bring plenty of clouds and rain, and another shot of cooler air by the weekend. Most locations across the central region will see nice weather today, but Taiwan will see quite a bit of rain and northern Indochina will be dealing with some clouds and scattered showers.

More hot weather is in store for residents and visitors in the south region today, as the seasonal northeast monsoon keeps the skies mostly clear and lets the warm sunshine come right through. A few showers will fall across portions of northern Vietnam, and Cambodia today as a new weather system forms to the north. Plenty of showers and thunderstorms will be around Indonesia and Malaysia, although coverage will be less than in previous days due to a lack of any real focused areas of convection. An old continental trough is also lingering over the northern Philippines, and a few showers and thunderstorms could pop up along this weak boundary during the afternoon.

Taking a look out across the tropics, and we find relatively silent conditions along the I.T.C.Z. (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone) today. Almost all locations in the tropics will see just a few clouds today, except for Palau, which could see a few afternoon thundershowers pop up with the small pocket of moisture that is moving through.
