NWPAC outlook, 13 JAN

NWPAC outlook, 13 JAN

Extreme cold continues to affect the northern region, while the central region gets ready for another storm system later this week. The south stays locked into perpetual summer, and the tropics remain quiet.

NORTH

Although temperatures are still bitterly cold across parts of northern China, Mongolia, and eastern Russia, the air mass is moderating just a bit as it warms up in the lower latitudes of eastern Asia. Even so, temperatures will not crawl above freezing in locations north of Beijing, while Beijing and Seoul will once again see a day with high temperatures rising to JUST above the 0C mark. The storm system that brought a serving of wet snow to the Tokyo area yesterday morning has pulled well offshore, helping to clear the skies a bit across the land of the rising sun. A new storm system will bring clouds and chance for showers to northeastern China and eastern Russia today, while the remainder of the north region will see abundant sunshine.

Xi’an 5 (41) -6 (21) Fair
Shanghai 6 (43) -1 (30) Partly Cloudy

CENTRAL

Temperatures across the central region are reflective of the weather in each location. Where there are clouds and rain, temps are cooler, and vice-versa. Clouds and some showers will keep it cool in southern China and Taiwan as moisture drawn in from the west by a developing storm system in central China rides over the cooler air at the surface. Everyone else will see just a few scattered clouds and relatively comfortable temperatures.

 SOUTH

Summer is staying put in the southern region today even as a cold front presses into parts of the northern Philippines. The seasonal northeast monsoon is helping to keep humidity down a bit, but temperatures across the region are hanging in there at near summertime levels, especially over portions of Vietnam. Most locations will see a dry day, with just a few scattered clouds, although, there is a bit of a wild card with the frontal system over the Philippines. A few thundershowers could pop up along the frontal boundary later this afternoon. Singapore will also see their daily dose of thunderstorms at the peak of daytime heating.

TROPICS

The tropics are once again utterly silent today, with just scattered clouds throughout the region. One little bit of concentrated convection is sliding along the I.T.C.Z. (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone) in Micronesia near Pohnpei, which will help fire off a few showers this afternoon. Everyone else will see a warm, tropical, Chamber Of Commerce type day today, with plenty of sunshine and gentle sea breezes.
