NWPAC outlook, 19 JAN

NWPAC outlook, 19 JAN

Another very cold day is ahead for most of the north region, while lingering moisture brings clouds and showers to parts of the central region. The south is still seeing very warm temperatures, and the tropics remain utterly quiet.

Very cold air continues to stay locked in over Mongolia, eastern Russia, Korea, and portions of northern China and most locations will see high temperatures well below freezing this afternoon. The latest storm system will keep snow falling over portions of Russia, northeastern North Korea, and northern Japan through the day. For central and eastern China, temperatures will be cool and skies will be sunny. Conditions will also improve across southern and central Japan today as the “south coast low” passes through a little faster than expected, and takes the clouds, rain, and snow with it. There are hints of another incoming push of Siberian air starting to show in the extreme northwestern portion of the region. The latest long-range forecasts show the possibility of a significant temperature drop later this week across the northern region with this new surge. We will keep an eye on things and keep you posted.

City High Temp C (F) Low Temp C (F) Conditions
Ulaanbaatar -18 (0) -33 (-27) Fair
Vladivostok -8 (18) -16 (3) Snow & Wind
Beijing -1 (30) -11 (12) Fair
Seoul -7 (19) -14 (7) Fair
Tokyo 9 (48) -2 (28) Fair
Xi’an 5 (41) -4 (25) Fair
Shanghai 9 (48) -2 (28) Fair

Lingering moisture behind the “south coast low” weather system east of Japan will continue to generate some clouds and scattered showers across Taiwan today. Farther to the east, temperatures have dropped significantly and skies are clearing in Iwo To, as the leading cold front of a double frontal system passes through. Central and southern China will see a mix of clouds and sun, while lingering moisture and an old trough keep skies cloudy over northern Indochina this afternoon. Long-range forecasts are also showing a significant temperature change over the central region, timed to begin this weekend, with effects being felt throughout the entirety of the region. We will keep you posted on developments.

City High Temp C (F) Low Temp C (F) Conditions
Kunming 17 (63) 4 (39) Fair & Windy

Hanoi 19 (66) 17 (63) Cloudy

Intense heat continues to build over portions of the south region, and for many locations, it is only going to get worse as we roll through the week. A few thunderstorms could pop up in portions of central Indochina as an old trough activates the available moisture at the peak of afternoon heating. A very weak ripple of energy is also passing through the southern Philippines and Malaysia, helping fire off some scattered thunderstorms in those locations. As mentioned in the previous segments, a temperature change is forecast for some of the most northerly of locations in the south region early next week. On the down side, temperatures will soar just south of those areas, and we could see dangerous heat build up over portions of Indochina as we kick off the next work week. We will keep you advised of the developments.

Conditions are quiet across the tropics once again today, with most locations enjoying a great day. One very weak ripple of energy is drifting westward through western Micronesia, and the windy remnants of PALI are still keeping it gusty in Majuro. Clouds will be increasing across the Marianas today as the most southerly cold front associated with the dual frontal system scenario playing out to the north begins to move into the area. All other locations in the tropical region can expect a great day, with scattered clouds and plenty of sunshine!
