Temperatures are rebounding in the north and the central following the latest Siberian surge. The south stays warm as it avoids the surge, and the tropics remain quiet and stable.
NORTH
Temperatures have rebounded quite nicely in the north region following the latest “Siberian surge” that settled in across most of Asia this past weekend. It’s still darn cold, especially in Mongolia, northern China, and eastern Russia, but temperatures are fully 5-15C above where readings were in the region just 48 hours ago. A new reinforcing surge of cold air will move into the region later this week and weekend, but it will not be a strong as the previous system and will allow temperatures to settle in to near normal levels. Weather across the north region will be quite nice today, with just a few scattered clouds and plentiful sunshine.

CENTRAL
Locations in the central region are still quite cold as the “Siberian surge” event continues for most of the region. The lone exceptions would be along the southeastern Chinese coast and offshore as Hong Kong and Taiwan see the beginnings of the next incoming storm system for the central region as a plume of moisture moves through and helps moderate the temperatures there a bit. The down side of that scenario is clouds, and a cold rain, are in store for northern portions of Vietnam and southern China. Everyone else should see just a few scattered clouds with adequate sunshine.

SOUTH
Although the “Siberian surge” spared most of the south region from any appreciable cooling effects, some of the cooler air did make its way into northern portions of Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, as well as the northern Philippines. Areas in southern Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and the southern Philippines have just been hot, as the warm air gets compressed along the frontal boundary. The compression is starting to end, and more normal temperatures are being felt across the southern region today. Areas to the north are still feeling the cooler effects of the surge for one more day, while areas to the south stay hot. Most locations will see just a few clouds today, with Singapore seeing the best chance for afternoon thunderstorms.

TROPICS
Fortunately, the tropics remain mostly quiet today as the I.T.C.Z. (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone) keeps a low profile, and that’s no pun. The zone is situated very far to the south, which is normal this time of year, and is mostly devoid of any significant activity. One weak wave is traversing the Marshall Islands and will move into eastern Micronesia over the next day or so, helping to increase clouds and rain chances across these island locations. Everyone else will see just a few clouds mixed in with the sun and nice, balmy, tropical temperatures.
