Cold air and improving conditions settle in across the north, while the central region deals with lots of moisture and a pretty raw day ahead. The south once again heats up to near-record levels and the tropics go silent once again.
NORTH
A new cold air surge has made its way through the northern region, and temperatures are reflective of that today. Mongolia will actually warm up a bit today as they get situated on the back side of the high pressure that is building in to the south and east. This high pressure will bring a cold day to the north region, but will also lend a hand in clearing out the skies, making for a generally nice day across the region, however a few chilly showers will linger over Japan as the latest storm system pulls away to the northeast.

CENTRAL
The central region will once again see the brunt of inclement weather activity today, as moisture from the west streams over the region and rides over the cooler air at the surface. The cold air boundary has settled just to the south of the region, and high pressure is building in slowly, bringing in plenty of cold air to start the week. This will be short-lived, as temperatures will rebound significantly by Wednesday. All locations in the central region can expect some clouds, with a rain/snow mix in store for portions of western and central China, more rain for Taiwan, and a continuation of cloudy and chilly weather in southern China and northern Indochina.

SOUTH
Intense heat continues to build in the south, but as they say in the deserts…”but, it’s a dry heat!” Indeed it is over portions of interior Indochina, as diurnal temperatures swings of up to 15C (27F) are taking place, virtually unheard of in the tropical climes. Dangerous heat will once again set up over Cambodia and southern Vietnam, with little relief in the form of clouds as high pressure stays put over the peninsula. Temperatures will be slightly cooler over the remainder of the south region, but will still average near 33C (91F) throughout. Most locations will see just a few scattered clouds, with the southern Philippines seeing a chance of rain as weak energy moves in from the east, and Singapore once again getting a chance for afternoon thunderstorms as the heat peaks later this afternoon.

TROPICS
As we enter the second month off the new 2016, we find the tropics characteristically quiet for this time of the year. What remains of 90W INVEST will be moving across the Philippines over the next 2 to 3 days, helping bring some much-needed rainfall to the parched earth of the archipelago. Some of this moisture will affect western Micronesia today as well. Activity along the ITCZ (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone) is generally null, so the rest of the tropics are quiet, with just a few scattered clouds here and there.
