NWPAC outlook, 04 FEB

NWPAC outlook, 04 FEB

It’s another quiet day across eastern Asia and the NWPAC as the cold air stays in the north region, and cooler air starts to move into the central region from the west. The south will see another hot day with some relief for the Philippines in sight, and the tropics remain mostly quiet.

NORTH

The cold chill of winter remains entrenched over most of the north region, with the most northerly locations in Mongolia, northern China and eastern Russia still dealing with the deep freeze of the Siberian air mass. Most locations will see temperatures hold steady, or warm up just a bit, from yesterday’s readings. Abundant high pressure across the region will keep skies free of precipitation, and just bring a few scattered clouds to many locations with plenty of sunshine.

City High Temp C (F) Low Temp C (F) Conditions
Ulaanbaatar -13 (9) -27 (-17) Partly Cloudy
Vladivostok -3 (27) -19 (-2) Fair
Beijing 4 (39) -6 (21) Partly Cloudy
Seoul 4 (39) -7 (19) Fair
Tokyo 9 (48) 1 (34) Partly Cloudy
Xi’an 9 (48) -4 (25) Fair
Shanghai 8 (46) -1 (30) Partly Cloudy

CENTRAL

While temperatures are warming up across the continental locations of the central region, there are signs of cooler air coming in from the west this weekend. Temperatures have already fallen in portions of southwestern China and northern Indochina, accompanied by clouds and showers, as the air mass boundary lifts the available moisture. Taiwan can’t get a break it would seem, as waves of rain continue to plague the island. Everyone else should see a pretty nice day with just a few scattered clouds along the coast of southeastern China.

City High Temp C (F) Low Temp C (F) Conditions
Kunming 9 (48) 3 (37) Scattered Showers
Hong Kong 18 (64) 12 (54) Partly Cloudy
Taipei 19 (66) 13 (55) Rain
Iwo To 11 (52) -1 (30) Fair
Hanoi 15 (59) 12 (54) Cloudy

SOUTH

It will be another hot day across the south region today, especially over southern Indochina as the skies stay relatively clear over much of the region. There are some signs that the Philippines may get some much-needed relief in the form of rainfall as a low pressure system forms along the stalled frontal boundary to the north and jets off to the northeast over the next 24-48 hours. This system will help act as a focusing mechanism for the moisture in the area, helping with the formation of clouds, showers, and maybe even a thunderstorm in the northern portions of the country as the low pressure area helps drag in some cooler and drier air from the north in its wake. Signs of this developing scenario are already starting to take shape today, and clouds and scattered showers are expected today across much of the archipelago. Clouds and scattered thunderstorms will also affect portions of Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia at the peak of heating this afternoon. The remainder of the region will see lots of sunshine with just a few clouds and very hot temperatures.

City High Temp C (F) Low Temp C (F) Conditions
Siem Reap 34 (93) 20 (68) Partly Cloudy
Ho Chi Minh 36 (97) 25 (77) Partly Cloudy

Brunei 31 (88) 26 (79) Sctd Thunderstorms
Singapore 31 (88) 26 (79) Thunderstorms

TROPICS

The tropics remain mostly quiet today; however, a rather focused area of clouds and thundershowers is starting to rear up far to the east near the Marshall Islands. No development is expected anywhere in the WPAC basin for the next 7 days, so this area is of little concern as it drifts to the west in the general flow of the I.T.C.Z. (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone). A few clouds and showers will also be seen in western Micronesia as a low pressure area begins to form along a frontal boundary to the northwest. Everyone else across the region will enjoy a picture-perfect day, with just a few clouds and lots of sunshine.

City High Temp C (F) Low Temp C (F) Conditions
Guam 27 (81) 23 (73) Scattered Showers
Yap 32 (90) 24 (75) Partly Cloudy

Have a superb Thursday!
