NWPAC outlook, 10 FEB

NWPAC outlook, 10 FEB

Temperatures continue to warm up a bit across much of eastern Asia and the NWPAC as we look forward to the next cold surge in a few days’ time, while the south stays very warm and the tropics remain relatively quiet.

NORTH

A complex weather scenario is taking place across eastern Asia and the immediate maritime region as ripples of energy roll across the region and pull in slightly cooler and drier air behind them. These weak shots of cooler air are just serving to keep the region from warming up more than is already taking place, but are not strong enough to make a significant impact on temperatures. A stalled cold front over the southern portions of the region is marking the dividing line between cool, comfortable air to the north, and much warmer air building up in to the south. Skies will be cloudy is spots along the stalled front, but rainfall will be hard to find. In the coming days, there are hints that another push of relatively cool air will take place through the northern and eastern portions of the region, which will cool temperatures and bring a chance of precipitation as we end the work week. As for today, most of the north region will see a nice day, with northern portions of Japan being the lone exception as a storm system just west of Hokkaido tracks to the north.

CENTRAL

Temperatures across the central region are also slowly warming up each day, as the warm air slowly works its way back north across the region. High pressure is keeping skies partly cloudy, but the sunshine is pretty intense, and getting more so each day, and the atmosphere is really starting to respond. Far to the east, Iwo To is still under the influence off the initial cold air mass, and temperatures are quite cool in the islands. The stalled cold front over the region will help kick up winds over portions of central China, and bring a few clouds to the southeastern Chinese coastal area. Otherwise, skies will be partly cloudy across the region later this afternoon.

 SOUTH

Temperatures are still hot across the south region, but the atmosphere is not seeing much “compression” across southeastern Asia as continental systems stay far to the north at this time. Moisture and gusty winds are still affecting parts of the eastern Philippines as high pressure keep the seasonal northeast monsoon well-motivated.  Most locations will see a rain-free afternoon, with only a few showers in the southern Philippines, and a good chance for thunderstorms across parts of Malaysia.

TROPICS

The tropics are mostly quiet once again, with very little in the way of disturbed weather to deal with. One wave of energy is passing through portions of Malaysia and Indonesia, bringing a good chance of thunderstorms to those areas, and another weaker wave of energy is passing through eastern Micronesia helping generate a few clouds. A few showers will also fall across the Mariana Islands and Wake Island as a weak pulse of continental energy slides through the northern portions of the tropics. Everyone else will see just a few scattered clouds as the afternoon sun beams in lots of sunshine!
