NWPAC outlook, 04 MAR

NWPAC outlook, 04 MAR

While most of eastern Asia and the NWPAC heats up, there are hints of a big change that is coming in during the next 7 days. The south is virtually baking in sub-tropical heat, while the tropics stay quiet.

Very warm spring-like temperatures continue to show up across much of the north region, but hints of the coming changes are on the horizon. A complex storm system is beginning to take shape over northwestern China and Mongolia. Much colder air is set up behind the developing system, poised to move to the south and east over the next 7-10 days, enveloping the entire north region in wintery chill once again. Snow showers are likely in Mongolia and northern China and, to a lesser degree, in eastern Russia today and tonight. The remainder of the continental landmass will see considerable cloudiness, but will remain dry for the time being. Tokyo will see a pleasant day, following the passage of the most recent storm system, as it moves away to the northeast and leaves behind mostly clear skies for the nation.

Shanghai 23 (73) 14 (57) Cloudy

The central region also continues to warm up, but as with the north region, big changes are on the way, with the full cold air impact to be felt during the middle of next week. For now, it feels a lot like spring across most of the region. A few showers will fall across Taiwan today as moisture from the southwest rides over the region in the mid and upper levels. Considerable cloudiness will also affect portions of southern China and northern Indochina, but rain will be scarce.

Intense heat is on tap for the south region today, especially over portions of southern Indochina and the southern Philippines. The northern Philippines could see some clouds and showers today as the remainder of the most recent frontal system washes out overhead in the form of a mid/upper-level trough of low pressure, and the monsoonal surface flow trucks in the moisture from the east. Singapore could see a few thunderstorms pop up in the hot afternoon sun, but the remainder of the region will see a very hot and dry day.

The tropics are once again very quiet today, with just a few scattered pockets of energy drifting along in the weak convergence of the I.T.C.Z. (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone). The Mariana Islands and western Micronesia will see a few clouds and showers as a result of continental energy that is hanging about in the area, and eastern Micronesia may see a few scattered clouds and showers as well. The rest of the tropical region will see generally fair weather, with warm temperatures and lots of sunshine.
