NWPAC outlook, 29 MAR

NWPAC outlook, 29 MAR

Spring sticks around for another day across the north and central regions, as summer heat continues to build in the south. The tropics are still quiet, but conditions are shaping up for an active season.

NORTH

Very warm, spring-like temperatures persist across the north region today. A couple of storm systems are sliding through, with the first very far to the east of Japan, pulling clouds and moisture away from the Land Of The Rising Sun, and a second weak system draped across northern China, Korea, and eastern Russia. This frontal system is quite weak, and will do nothing more than reinforce the northerly and northwesterly wind flow, doing little in terms of lowering temperatures in the near-term. Skies will be cloudy along, and ahead, of the front, affecting portions of central China from east to west, and bringing some showers to the Korean peninsula.

City High Temp C (F) Low Temp C (F) Conditions
Ulaanbaatar 11 (52) -3 (27) Fair
Vladivostok 9 (48) -3 (27) PM Showers
Beijing 23 (73) 6 (43) Fair
Seoul 15 (59) 4 (39) Showers
Tokyo 18 (64) 9 (48) Fair
Xi’an 23 (73) 9 (48) Cloudy
Shanghai 23 (73) 14 (57) Cloudy

CENTRAL

Temperatures continue to edge slowly upwards across the central region, as mostly sunny skies dominate the majority of locations. Moisture being dragged in from the west ahead of a cold front in China will bring some clouds to southwestern China and northern Vietnam. The remainder of the region will see a nice day with plenty of sunshine.

City High Temp C (F) Low Temp C (F) Conditions
Kunming 21 (70) 10 (50) Cloudy & Windy
Hong Kong 20 (68) 16 (61) Partly Cloudy
Taipei 23 (73) 15 (59) Fair
Iwo To 17 (63) 16 (61) Fair
Hanoi 22 (72) 17 (63) Cloudy

 SOUTH

Intense heat continues to build in the south, with hotter days yet to come across the region. The northern island of Luzon in the Philippines is still feeling the effects of the latest late-season cool surge, with temperatures a bit lower than the rest of the region, and moisture polling up along the eastern coastal mountain ranges, helping provide some lift and squeeze out some showers. The southern Philippines will see moisture moving in from the east, helping enhance rain chances there as well. Singapore will see another round of scattered afternoon thunderstorms in the afternoon heat, but the remainder of the region will see lots of sunshine.

City High Temp C (F) Low Temp C (F) Conditions
Siem Reap 36 (97) 26 (79) Fair
Ho Chi Minh 34 (93) 24 (75) Fair
Manila 32 (90) 24 (75) Partly Cloudy
Davao City 34 (93) 24 (75) Showers
Brunei 33 (91) 26 (79) Partly Cloudy
Singapore 32 (90) 27 (81) Scattered T-storms

 TROPICS

After a brief flare-up of convergence along the I.T.C.Z. (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone) over the past 4 days, conditions appear to be quieting down a bit across the tropics today. No development is expected anytime soon, which is typical for a season following a strong El Nino event. A few showers will fall over portions of Micronesia and the Marianas but, all-in-all; it will be a nice day across the region.

City High Temp C (F) Low Temp C (F) Conditions
Guam 28 (82) 23 (73) AM Showers
Yap 32 (90) 25 (77) Partly Cloudy
Palau 32 (90) 23 (73) Partly Cloudy
Chuuk 31 (88) 27 (81) Partly Cloudy
Pohnpei 31 (88) 27 (81) Cloudy
Majuro 29 (84) 27 (81) Ptly Cloudy & Wind
Wake 26 (79) 23 (73) Ptly Cloudy & Wind

S.S.T.’s (Sea-Surface Temperatures) are increasing quite nicely across the region as we progress through the days of Spring, due to the increased sun angle and longer heating duration of each day. However, moisture is not very plentiful west of 150 degrees longitude, and south of 10 degrees north latitude. With the impulses of drier air moving in from the northwest over the next few weeks, this will inhibit any significant development in the mid-term.
