Temperatures cool just a bit in the north region while clouds and showers dominate most of the central region. More heat is in store for the south as the tropics show a little life but nothing of real importance.
NORTH
A strong impulse of energy will slide out of eastern China, south of South Korea, and into southwestern Japan today, bringing in plenty of clouds and showers. The cloudy canopy is helping to keep temperatures down from the near-record levels they have seen over the past 3 days in parts of eastern China and Korea. This storm system will team up with a slow-moving cold front over central Japan tonight and tomorrow and bring heavy rain to some parts of the archipelago. Conditions are much better to the west and north, where warm spring temperatures abound under partly cloudy skies.

CENTRAL
The seasonal east Asian monsoon, also known as the méiyǔ or plum rains, is starting to set up very well as continuous pulses of energy from the west slide over the boundary between the continental air to the north and the humid, tropical air to the south that is slowly propagating northward. The entire region will see a good chance for showers and occasional thunderstorms today as another pulse of energy moves offshore of eastern China, dragging a weak trough through southeastern China, Taiwan, and the Ryukyu Islands. This trough will be the focal points of the activity in the region, while areas to the west and south will deal with moisture associated with new energy coming in from the west.

SOUTH
The heat stays in place in the south, but the good news is, most locations will see air temperatures stay below 40C (104F) today, however, when factoring in the humidity that continues to build into the region, we could see indices well in excess of 45C (113F) across Laos and interior locations within Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the northern Philippines. Very humid, tropical air is building in the southern half of the region, where the best chances for rain can be found.

TROPICS
The tropics are still showing some signs of things to come, as a daily dose of direct sunshine heats up the ocean and helps the humidity build across the region. The trough mentioned yesterday continues to track westward in a strong fetch of easterlies associated with the trade winds and I.T.C.Z. (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone). It’s still located in far western Micronesia, extending from NW to SE between longitude 127.0E-141.0E, and latitude 13.0N-4.0N. This system is expected to remain weak as it slows down in the next day or so and dissipates in a weak surge of energy from the north. Another area that looks impressive on satellite is far to the east in the Marshall Islands. Although this area will be responsible for clouds and showers, no development is expected at any point in the foreseeable future. Due to the building moisture and intense sunshine, showers and thunderstorms are a good bet just about anywhere throughout the tropical region below 10 degrees north latitude, with the Mariana Islands and Wake Island being the exceptions.
