Spring makes its case felt in the northernmost reaches of the north region as more moisture impacts the weather in the central region. The south has finally cooled off a bit with the influx of moisture that has moved in from the tropics, which, by the way, are still very quiet at this time.
NORTH
What a difference a few days make. Just last week, snow was falling across portions of Mongolia and extreme northwestern China. As we open the page on a new week, we find high temperatures in the mid 20’s (mid 70’s F) in Mongolia and northern locales in the north region, indicating that spring has finally arrived for everyone. A healthy storm system is moving through northeastern China and eastern Russia today, with a cold front sweeping through Korea. All off this activity has its sights set on Japan starting tonight and tomorrow. Behind the front, temperatures are relatively unchanged, but the air is a bit drier, helping provide some humidity relief.

CENTRAL
Conditions are improving just a bit over the central region, where the past weekend saw another wave of energy slide in from the west in association with the East Asian monsoon. That system is moving out, but a trialing weak cold front, stretched from southern Japan, southwest to Hainan Island in the South China Sea, will be the focus of the lingering moisture and residual energy in this part of the system. Overall, it’s shaping up where inland locales can expect a warm and mostly sunny day, while coastal, and particularly offshore spots, could see a shower or two with an occasional thunderstorm in the mix.

SOUTH
For the first time in the past 60 days, I am writing a report that does not include a temperature above 35C (95F) in the south region. Tropical moisture has moved into the region to stay and there are even hints that the seasonal monsoon shift is slowly starting to take place across the region, especially evident over Indochina where a southwesterly flow is being aided by a developing Indian Ocean cyclone to the west. The moisture is doing what it does, helping to moderate the intense heat and sunshine of the tropics into a more bearable climate situation. With the moisture in place, thunderstorms will be possible in just about any location across the south region, and especially in the afternoon over Indochina as the hot sun gives the tropical moisture a nice lift, and squeezes out the drops.

TROPICS
The tropics are still doing their usual off-season ‘thing’, warming up and showing signs that the moisture is out there, but just not spinning anything of consequence up just yet. The moisture is plentiful, and growing, across the region, so just about everyone will see a shower or thunderstorms today.
