Warm, summer-like air has settled in over much of the north region while the central region stays warm and wet. The south sees relief from the intense heat in the form of showers and thunderstorms, as the tropics ramp up just a bit.
NORTH
A slow-moving spring storm system is slowly chugging eastward as it moves offshore of Japan. Temperatures behind this front are basically unchanged, as the front is marking the boundary of some very dry, but relatively warm, air. Another shot of cooler, drier air is making its way into Mongolia, where temperatures will resemble June or July readings today, only to see a significant cool-down back to more seasonable levels tomorrow. Most of the region will see a fine day today, with lots of sunshine and a few scattered clouds.

CENTRAL
With the official declaration of the East Asian rainy season by J.M.A. (Japan Meteorological Agency) yesterday, we confirm what has been widely known all along…it’s darn rainy in the central region! Again today, we find a good chance for showers and even some strong thunderstorms in the region, especially over the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan, extending southwest to Hong Kong. This is due to a nearly-stationary frontal boundary that is stalled just to the east. Western and southern locales will see fewer clouds with lots of warm, spring sunshine.

SOUTH
The intense heat in the south has finally been brought down a notch or two by the moderating effects of the shifting monsoon and generally increased moisture in the region. Once again, we find another rainy day across the region, as tropical moisture moves in from two directions. Southeastern Asia is seeing an influx of moisture from the southwest as the seasonal monsoon shift starts to take place, and moisture is added by a developing weak cyclone in the Indian Ocean. The Philippines is also seeing a strong uptick in moisture due to ripples of moisture moving in from the tropics to the east. The intense sun will lift up the moisture in many locations today, offering showers and thunderstorms to just about everyone, bringing some relief from the heat.

TROPICS
As we peer out over the tropics from space, we see some pretty impressive-looking easterly waves cruising the I.T.C.Z. (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone) superhighway. But it’s all for show, because, fortunately, there is nothing significant developing out there. These ripples of energy will help generate some clouds, showers, and thunderstorms across the vast majority of the tropical region, giving everyone a pretty decent chance for some afternoon rain.
