Heavy Rainfall Triggers Landslides in Western Japan

Evacuation advisories are in place across swaths of Kyushu following days of heavy rainfall in the area. This is including 220 people in Kagoshima due to heavy rainfall this morning.

Landslide Threat

Max 1hr rain totals were in Kumamoto Thursday morning up to 77mm. In total though some areas of Kyushu over the past week have topped 600mm of total precipitation.

In Hiroshima a train was de-railed following a small landslide on the tracks.


Twenty six people were on board at the time, no injuries were reported though.


More rain is in the forecast as well for the region. Southern Kyushu could see an additional 180mm through Friday until things finally start to improve heading in to the weekend.

Not only western Japan is getting the rain though, central areas will be looking at high levels of instability through the afternoon hours on Thursday. Some locations in Northern Kanto could see strong to severe thunderstorms with the threat of hail and lightning.
