NWPAC outlook, 22 AUG

NORTH

Typhoon 10W MINDULLE is moving into central Japan today bringing typhoon conditions with very heavy rainfall, strong sustained winds with dangerous gusts, and coastal storm surge and flooding. 10W MINDULLE should work its way along the coastline of northern Japan as we get into the next couple of days, bringing heavy rainfall and coastal flooding to much of the northern half of the island of Honshu. Meteorologist Robert Speta is on the scene and will be providing updates through the day. Elsewhere across the northern region, a shot of cooler air has settled in over Mongolia and northern China, and there are indications that some of this cooler air will work its way into central China by mid-week. It will be a welcome relief to the city of Xi’an, which will see another day near 40C, with heat indices near 44C (111F). The weather will be mostly fair today across much of the continental north region, with plenty of sunshine and a few scattered clouds.

CENTRAL

Conditions will be fairly good across much of the central region today, with a few scattered thunderstorms over interior southern China, and northern Vietnam this afternoon. All eyes are watching the erratic course that has been forecast for Tropical Storm 12W LIONROCK, as most solutions are trending towards a very close pass to Okinawa later this week.

SOUTH

Plentiful tropical moisture over the south region will help generate numerous afternoon showers and thunderstorms across the region. A weak tropical wave is moving across the Philippines, which may heighten rain chances across much of the archipelago today. Everyone else stands a very good chance of seeing afternoon rain, and a few strong thunderstorms.

TROPICS

Although there are numerous areas that one could suspect for development, officially speaking, there are only two systems out there.

TAAG, 22 AUG

TAAG, 22 AUG

Typhoon 10W MINDULLE has its sights set on Tokyo today, and it looks like it’s going to ramp up just a bit before making landfall later this afternoon. Meteorologist Robert Speta resides in Tokyo, and will be providing us with constant information through the day. MINDULLE is expected to make landfall and start to weaken considerably as it continues tracking over the eastern prefectures of Honshu through mid-week.

10W full, 22 AUG

10W full, 22 AUG

Tropical Storm 12W LIONROCK has been caught up in a bit of a Fujiwhara interaction with 10W MINDULLE over the past 24 hours, and the system has slowed to a crawl. Model solutions are all over the place, but most are trending towards a general slow southwesterly movement into the immediate Ryukyu Islands vicinity by the middle of the week. The system is expected to gain strength during this time, as MINDULLE clears the scene. It’s safe to say we have only just begun with 12W LIONROCK.

12W full, 22 AUG

12W full, 22 AUG

Elsewhere across the tropics, strong ripples of energy are cruising along the monsoonal front, with plenty of moisture and energy to generate some strong afternoon showers and thunderstorms, and general squally weather for some locations.
