NORTH
TD 12W LIONROCK is moving through the northern Sea of Japan this morning with southeastern Russia in its sights for a second landfall. The storm raged across northern Japan yesterday bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and all the usual hazards of a tropical system. For a full report on the devastation wrought by LIONROCK, please see the report by Meteorologist Robert Speta. The storm is transitioning into an extra-tropical system and should dissipate over the Asian continent in the next couple of days. Elsewhere, the cooler air that settled in over the weekend is moderating a bit, bringing warmer temperatures to much of the region. It will be a windy and rainy day over southeastern Russia, and rainfall associated with the outer effects of LIONROCK will fall across the Korean peninsula.

CENTRAL
Lingering moisture across much of the central region will lend a hand towards afternoon shower and thunderstorm development over the southeastern Chinese coast, the south-central Chinese highlands, and northern Indochina. Temperatures will warm up to seasonably warm levels across the region as the hottest air stays to the south.

SOUTH
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will pop up this afternoon across much of the south region as deep tropical moisture gets a lift from the warm afternoon sunshine. The Philippines will see a bit of a break today, as only the northernmost reaches of the island of Luzon will see any significant rainfall thanks to a tropical trough of low pressure lingering to the north.

TROPICS
The tropics have quieted down considerably as the long-lived TD 12W LIONROCK gets ready to exit stage left, leaving the basin mostly devoid of any significant activity.
TD 12W LIONROCK continues extra-tropical transition and continues into the Asian mainland later today. It’s been a wacky run for LIONROCK, as the past track will show. Unfortunately, LIONROCK has wrought terrible devastation over parts of northern Japan, an area not hit by a tropical storm-strength, or stronger, system since reliable records have been kept. For the full report on the effects of Typhoon LIONROCK in Japan, please see the full report by Meteorologist Robert Speta.
Elsewhere across the tropics, scattered pockets of instability litter the region, but nothing organized in any way is out there, nor are there any forecasts for one on computer models. For today, we can just look forward to lots of sunshine with a few scattered thunderstorms here and there to make the afternoon a bit more exciting and a dash cooler.
