NORTH
As we roll into the first weekend of October, cooler changes are on the horizon for the north region. A bit of cooler and drier air has ushered in the feel of autumn over much of the region, but a stalled cold front draped over central Japan and extending westward into Korea and eastern China will keep things damp at times this weekend. Japan is keeping a close eye on tropical storm 21W CHABA, as forecasts take the system near Okinawa, and into the mainland islands of Japan next week.

CENTRAL
The central region will see a mix of weather conditions this weekend, with most of the precipitation falling over the coastal areas of southeastern China. Temperatures will be seasonably warm across the region, as the cooler air stays to the north for the time being. All in all, it should shape up to be a rather pleasant weekend over the region. Looking ahead, residents of Okinawa are preparing for the onslaught of tropical storm 21W CHABA, which is expected to be a strong typhoon as it passes near the island late on Monday. More details on CHABA are available in the ‘tropics’ section of this update.

SOUTH
Autumn has not even given an inkling that it is headed to the south region, as deep tropical moisture combines with a daily dose of sunshine to bring showers and thunderstorms to much of the region. A recent monsoonal surge has been making things difficult over western provinces of Luzon in the Philippines, with flooding rainfall occurring the past two days. A weak low pressure area over northern Indochina will ramp up rain chances across northern Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia through tomorrow. The remainder of the region will see more of the same, but not enough to dampen spirits on the first weekend of October.

TROPICS
The tropics are ripe and churning out plenty of energy as we get into the latter part of the season. Things are a bit quiet now, but attention is clearly focused on tropical storm 21W CHABA.
Severe tropical storm 21W CHABA continues to slowly strengthen as the path shifts a bit more to the NW now. Current forecasts continue to fall in better alignment, taking the system VERY close to Okinawa Monday and Tuesday as a relatively strong typhoon. Of course, with a typhoon, it’s all about location, so residents in Okinawa are watching this storm closely, and hoping it passes to the east, rather than directly overhead or west of the island. For more details on this developing situation, please see the full report by Meteorologist Robert Speta here.
Another weak area of disturbed weather is being watched as 99W INVEST continues to track slowly westward. Current computer models are in pretty good agreement on this system, showing a weak storm approaching the northern Philippines and Luzon Strait late next week.
The remainder of the region will see a good chance for showers and thunderstorms over the weekend, with the best weather being found in eastern Micronesia and Wake Island.
