NWPAC outlook, 19 DEC

NWPAC outlook, 19 DEC

NORTH

Aside from the very cold air over the northern third of the north region, I think the biggest story today is the thick haze over portions of northeastern China. Air quality levels are ranging from unhealthy to hazardous across these locales due to high pressure dominating these areas, combined with the heavy pollution from industry and transportation in the larger cities. These conditions are expected to remain over these locales for the next couple of days at least. Elsewhere across the region, another shot of very cold air will start moving into the region mid-week, and by Christmas Day, temperatures will be the coldest of the season in Mongolia and northern China, while other areas to the south and east will see the drop following the holiday. Lingering showers will keep things damp across the Korean peninsula and eastern China, and foggy conditions will hamper travel across the higher terrain of central China.

The latest continental surge has cleared much of the central region, as a few showers will hang around southern China and northern Indochina. Cloudy skies are dominant over the higher terrain of south-central China, while locations to the east will enjoy a few scattered clouds and sunshine.

SOUTH

A new surge has moved into the south region, helping to clear the skies a bit across the northern portion of the region. Areas to the south, however, continue to deal with deep tropical moisture, showers, and scattered thunderstorms. Temperatures will range from mild to warm, with the coolest readings over the northern portion of the region.

TROPICS

The tropics are fairly quiet today, but there are hints in the long-range forecasts that a system may be on the horizon.

TAAG, 19 DEC

TAAG, 19 DEC

Continual surges of continental air has dried out much of the tropics, with persistent moisture and convergence hanging around south of 10 degrees north latitude, Long-rage forecast models are showing signs of a weak system developing over the coming days, bringing inclement weather to portions of the Philippines over the Christmas holiday. Otherwise, a few thunderstorms will pop up over eastern Micronesia, western Micronesia and the Marshall Islands, while the Marianas and Wake will see a pleasant day.
