New tropical system developing east of Guam

A developing tropical disturbance known as Invest 90W is showing increasing signs of organization in the western Pacific Ocean, raising concerns for parts of Micronesia and the Mariana Islands in the days ahead.

As of this week, the system remains unnamed but has begun consolidating, with multiple low level circulations forming within a broader area of convection southeast of Guam. Forecasters note that the disturbance is already behaving like a low pressure area, a key step toward tropical cyclone development.

“Conditions are becoming more favorable for development,” analysts say, pointing to warm sea surface temperatures and relatively low wind shear that could allow the system to strengthen further.

Forecast models indicate that Invest 90W will track generally northwest toward the Mariana Islands, potentially bringing deteriorating weather conditions to Saipan and Guam by the weekend. Rainbands may begin affecting the region as early as Saturday, with the potential for heavier rainfall, gusty winds and rough seas into Sunday and Monday.

According to guidance from the ECMWF, the system could pass just south of Guam while intensifying into at least a tropical storm, with some scenarios suggesting it may briefly reach low end typhoon strength. The GFS offers a similar outlook in the short term, though differences emerge later in the forecast period.

Despite increasing confidence in near term impacts for the Mariana Islands, uncertainty remains high beyond the weekend.

Some long range projections bring the system closer to northern Luzon by mid April, while others keep it well to the east before curving it northward into the open Pacific. At this time, no major forecast model indicates a direct landfall in the Philippines, though forecasters caution that long range outlooks can change significantly.

“The track will largely depend on the position of surrounding weather features, particularly a subtropical ridge to the north,” meteorologists explain. “If a trough develops and dips southward, it could pull the system north. Otherwise, it may continue farther west.”

Currently, parts of Micronesia are already experiencing unsettled weather from the disturbance. Areas such as Chuuk have reported increased showers and thunderstorms as the system slowly drifts west northwest.

While the Philippines remains under generally hot and dry conditions, forecasters say the developing system could eventually help draw moisture into the region, depending on its eventual track.

The most likely scenario at this stage suggests the system will pass near or south of Guam, remain east of the Philippines and then recurve northward with limited direct impacts. However, officials emphasize that confidence in this outcome remains moderate at best.

Residents in Guam and surrounding islands are advised to monitor updates closely and prepare for the possibility of rough weather conditions this weekend. Those in the Philippines are encouraged to stay informed but not alarmed, as the situation continues to evolve.

Invest 90W is expected to be monitored closely over the coming days as it moves through a favorable environment for further development.
